Church History Short Answer and Essay Topics

Short Answer Topics – Answer 3 of 6

  1. Select one region of the world (chapter 15) and explain the Church’s relation to that region of the world during the period of colonialism.
  2. What role did the parish and the parish school play for Catholics in the US? (remember 1919)
  3. Describe some differences between Martin Luther and Henry VIII’s splits with the Catholic Church.
  4. How did the Babylonian Captivity and Western Schism weaken the Church?
  5. What did Cardinal Gibbons do on the question of labor?
  6. How did the Jesuit Order respond to the crisis of the Reformation?

Essay Topics – Answer 1 of 2

  1. Evaluate selections from Rerum Novarum and the Appalachian Bishops’ Letter (documents provided).  Explain what is similar about each document.  Explain how each document responds to the historical circumstances of 1891 and 1975.
  2. Select and explain three instances from the entirety of Church History that demonstrates creative fidelity to Jesus’ call for discipleship.  Two of your three examples have to come after the year 1000 AD.
